Trekking Details
UMBWE GATE (5,900 FT) - UMBWE
CAVES CAMP (9,500 FT)
Climb Kili by the challenging Umbwe
Route. Today you will be transferred
from your Moshi hotel to Umbwe Gate
to begin your ascent. The rough
trail cuts through a dense
rainforest which will challenge you
with its tree roots and stones. Your
6 to 7 hour trek through the forest
leads you to the wooded campsite at
Umbwe Caves where a hot dinner
awaits you.
UMBWE CAVES CAMP - BARRANCO CAMP
(13,000 FT)
Rise with the sun for an
invigorating walk up the steep trail
to Barranco Camp. This is a trek of
between 6 and 7 hours, ascending
through the forest and edging along
a thin ridgeline with cliffs that
drop away on either side of the
trail.
BARRANCO CAMP - KARANGA CAMP
(13,000 FT)
Feel the intensity and unparalleled
beauty of this amazing trek. From
the steep descent into the bottom of
the Great Barranco Valley to the
climb up the almost vertical
Barranco Wall, this is an
unforgettable adventure. Trekking
for approximately 4 to 5 hours,
hikers on this trail are overlooked
by Kibo’s glinting glaciers and
Mawenzi’s haughty, jagged peak.
KARANGA CAMP - BARAFU CAMP
(15,200 FT)
Go up, up, up! We begin this 5 to 6
hour day on a trail that turns
steadily uphill. The temperatures
will drop and the landscape will
grow more barren as we approach
Barafu Camp, which is set on an
exposed ridge, acting a base camp
from which you will make your final
assault on the summit around
midnight. Our cooks will make sure
you eat and drink as much as
possible before retiring to your
tent for rest and a few hours of
sleep.
BARAFU CAMP - SUMMIT - MWEKA CAMP
(10,200 FT)
Rouse yourself at midnight for a
hard scramble up the inclines of
scree to reach Gilman’s Point just
as the sun rises. Continue for 2 to
3 hours along the lip of the crater
to reach Uhuru Peak - the rooftop of
Africa and its highest point. Smile
for the camera as you stand proudly
among the sparkling glaciers and ice
cliffs in the early morning light.
Take pleasure in the descent to Mweka Camp,
which is
relatively easy and we now make our
way there, full of happiness and an
enormous sense of achievement. Time
now to relax, rest and swap stories
of your incredible climb.
MWEKA CAMP - MWEKA GATE
Enjoy once again the hike from Mweka
Camp to Mweka Gate, which can take
anything from two to five hours,
depending on trail conditions (rain
can occur at any time of year at
this elevation and a muddy trail
calls for a very slow pace). Once we
have descended the 4,500 ft to the
road-head, it is time for a packed
lunch and ‘goodbye’ to your guides,
porters and new-found mountain
friends - ‘KWAHERI’
