Trekking Details
RONGAI GATE - FIRST CAVE CAMP
(8,695 FT)
Let the magic begin! After taking a
4x4 overland for registering at
Rongai Gate. Our climb begins at the
beautiful wooded village of Nale
Moru (1,950 m) on a small path
through fields of corn and potatoes
before entering the pine forest. It
takes about three to four hours to
reach the first camp, which is
perched on the edge of the moorland
zone where the forest begins to thin
out.
FIRST CAVE CAMP - SECOND CAVE
CAMP (11,319 FT)
Adventure on with a steady ascent
from First to Second Cave, across
open grasslands which attract
elephant. From second cave camp, the
views out over Amboseli and Tsavo
are superb. This section of the
trail takes approximately four
hours.
SECOND CAVE CAMP - THIRD CAVE
CAMP (12,713 FT)
Ramble on a gentle gradient up to
Third Cave, with superb views of
Kibo and the eastern ice fields on
the crater rim. Allow yourself three
to four hours for this section of
the trail. Our easy, steady pace on
the Rongai Route greatly eases
acclimatization and levels of
difficulty.
THIRD CAVE CAMP - KIBO HUT ON
MARANGU TRAIL (15,463 FT)
Continue your climb in the rain
shadow of Kilimanjaro. Ascend on the
east side of Kibo, crossing the
saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo and
taking about four to five hours to
reach Kibo Hut. The remainder of
this day is devoted to rest and
recreation, in preparation for our
attempt on the summit which starts
around midnight.
KIBO HUT - SUMMIT -HOROMBO HUT
(12,201 FT)
Conquer the summit with a midnight
assault, over heavy scree and steep
inclines to reach Gilman’s Point as
the sun rises. We continue for two
to three hours along the lip of the
crater to reach Uhuru Peak, the
highest point in Africa. You have
now reached to top of Kilimanjaro
and stand among her sparkling
glaciers and ice cliffs in the early
morning light.
Trek down to Kibo Hut, a relatively
quick descent, for a well-deserved
breakfast before continuing
downwards to our final night on the
mountain at Horombo Hut where we
will eat, drink and make merry as we
celebrate our summit day.
HOROMBU HUT - MARANGU GATE
Appreciate the different flora and
thick forest on this side of the
mountain as you walk down from
Horombo to Marangu Gate. Now is the
time for a fond farewell to your
guides, porters and new-found
mountain friends - until next time?
