Ngorongoro Crater
Safari Highlights
Discover the dense rainforest which
covers most of the Ngorongoro
Highlands, an excellent area for
walking and hiking. Trek into
Empaakai and Olmoti Crater, walk
with a Maasai guide through their
cattle herds and view their
scattered, sometimes temporary,
homesteads.
Drive down into Ngorongoro Crater,
where large prides of lion hunt and
huge clans of spotted hyena roam
among the thousands of wildebeest,
zebra and gazelle which live around
the central soda lake, on the
grasslands and swamps and in the
Lerai and Ngoitokitok forests. Watch
elephant and buffalo, rhino and
baboon, taking advantage of the
shade in these yellow-barked acacia
forests.
Venture on to the
shores of Lake Magadi for
spectacular close-ups of flamingo,
pelican, cormorant, Egyptian geese
and many other water birds.
Admire
the elegant secretary bird and
crowned crane as they pick their
long-legged way across the
grasslands and watch out for the
golden blur of a serval cat leaping
from the undergrowth.
Laugh at the clumsy hyena loping
into the water, trying for a
flamingo snack. Ngorongoro can be
visited throughout the year. During
the ‘green season’ it is
spectacular, with carpets of
wildflowers and birds in their
dazzling and extravagant mating
plumage.
Enjoy
the comfort of your nights on safari
with AFRICAT, in
Lodges & Camps,
both within and outside the parks.
For following the great migration,
we use mobile camps, which enable us
to stay very close to the herds.
