Mahale Mountains
National Park
Safari Highlights:
Witness the chimpanzee sanctuary of
Mahale Mountains - and fish for your
own dinner! While chimps are the
main attraction at this park, the
lush forest slopes support a large
variety of forest fauna and a
kaleidoscopic array of colorful
forest birds.
Discover Mahale, also known as Nkungwe
after the park’s largest mountain
(held sacred by the local Tongwe
people) and at 2,460 m the highest
of the six prominent points that
make up the Mahale Range.
Swim and snorkel in the impossibly
clear waters of the world’s longest,
second-deepest and least-polluted
freshwater lake, and - you got it -
go fishing for your supper. The lake
harbors an estimated 1,000 fish
species.
Take wing to Mahale by charter
flight from Arusha, Dar or Kigoma.
As well as 2-day chimp
trekking, hiking/camping
safaris and snorkeling/fishing are
also available at Mahale.
Enjoy
the luxury of Mahale's two seasonal
tented camps, go rustic in one of
the rest-houses, or simply pitch
your tent at the large campsite.
