Kitulo National Park
Safari Highlights:
Visit the well-watered volcanic
soils of Kitulo Plateau, perched
between the rugged peaks of the
Kipengere, Poroto and Livingstone
Mountains, which support the largest
and most important montane grassland
in Tanzania.
Experience the magic of “Bustani ya Mungu” - God’s
Garden - so-called by local people and
dubbed “the Serengeti of flowers” by
botanists. Kitulo is the first national park in
tropical Africa to be gazetted
largely for its floral significance.
Explore this watershed of the Great
Ruaha River which supports not only
a multitude of orchids but also the
stunning red-hot poker and a variety
of aloes, proteas, geraniums, giant
lobelias, lilies and aster daisies.
Delight in the birds of Kitulo, an
ornithologist’s paradise. The rare Denham’s bustard
is resident, alongside a breeding
colony of the endangered blue
swallow and such range-restricted
species as mountain marsh widow, Njombe cisticola and Kipengere
seedeater.
Marvel at the endemic species of
butterfly, chameleon, lizard and
frog which serve to further enhance
the magnificent biological wealth of
this rare botanical wonderland.
Discover Kitulo by 4WD from Chimala, 78 km east of Mbeya. Once
in the park there are good hiking
trails across grasslands, and hill
climbing on the neighboring ranges
can be arranged.
There is no accommodation in this
park, though three special campsites
are planned for the near future.
