Katavi National Park
Safari Highlights:
Are you an intrepid traveler,
seeking isolated, untrammeled
wilderness? Then Katavi is for you.
Seek out the Katuma River and
associated floodplains with
Tanzania’s densest concentrations of
hippo and crocodile. Visit during
the rainy season when the lush,
marshy lakes are a haven for myriad
water birds.
Explore this wilderness in the dry
season, when flood waters retreat
and the river is reduced to a
shallow, muddy trickle.
Watch thousands of elephant,
buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala and
reedbuck converging on Katavi park,
providing easy pickings for the
numerous lion prides and spotted
hyena clans whose territories
overlap on the floodplains.
Take a tough but
spectacular drive from Mbeya to Katavi
Park which is situated in the remote
southwest, east of Lake Tanganyika.
The park can also be reached by charter flight
from Dar es Salaam or Arusha.
Navigate Katavi by safari vehicle or
on foot. Camping is poss00ible in the dry
season (June through October) but roads
within this park are often flooded
and therefore impassable during the
rainy season.
Spend your nights at the rest house
or in one of the six bandas.
Alternatively, pitch your tent at
one of the campsites.
