Gombe Stream National Park
Safari Highlights:
Track
the chimps of Gombe Stream, the
smallest of Tanzania’s national
parks. This fragile strip of
chimpanzee habitat straddles the
steep slopes and river valleys which
hem in the sandy northern shore of
Lake Tanganyika.
Enjoy observing the chimpanzees,
habituated to human visitors during Jane Goodall’s
internationally acclaimed behavioral
research program which commenced in
1960 and continues to this day.
Visit the other attractions at Gombe
Stream - a troop of beachcomber
olive baboons and both red-tailed
and red colobus monkeys which
inhabit the forest canopy alongside
some interesting bird species.
Admire the lanterns of
hundreds of small wooden boats on
the lake after dusk, forming a reflection of
the star-studded African night sky.
Step aboard a local lake-taxi from Kigoma; these take approximately
three hours to reach Gombe.
Alternatively, motorboats can be
hired and with these faster vessels
the trip takes only one hour. Kigoma is connected to Dar and
Arusha by scheduled flights.
Take part in other activities at Gombe:
these include hiking,
swimming and snorkeling. From Kigoma, it is a short trip to Ujiji
where you can watch the renowned
dhow builders at work and visit the
site of Stanley’s famous greeting to
Dr Livingstone.
Spend a night in the new luxury
tented lodge, the self-catering
hostel or the guest house.
Alternatively, pitch your tent at a
lakeshore campsite.
