Udzungwa National Park
Safari Highlights:
Enter in awe the Eastern Arc
Mountains, an archipelago of
isolated massifs - dubbed the
African Galapagos for its treasure
trove of endemic plants and animals.
Hike forest trails between 30 m high
trees with their fungi, lichens,
mosses and ferns. Gaze in amazement
at the Sanje Waterfall, plunging
through a misty spray to the
forested valley 170 m below. Pause
in sunshine-dappled glades, alive
with birdsong.
Discover an exceptionally beautiful
and ecologically rich environment in
this fairly new National Park, with
its unique rainforest which sustains
rare plant species and forest birds
not found anywhere else in the
world.
Encounter the newly discovered Sanje
crested mangabey and the endemic
Iringa red colobus monkeys in the
forest; spot the other four primate
species resident here.
Walk and ramble in Udzungwa
Mountains Park, good all year round
(although it can be slippery in the
rainy season). The dry season is
from June through October (but one
should be prepared for rain at any
time in these primeval forests).
Experience the natural wonders of
Udzungwa park, bordered by the Great Ruaha
River, comprised of some
2,000 sq kms and only two hour drive
from Mikumi National Park.
Go to
ground in your tent and let the
mysterious sounds of this primeval
mountain reserve color your dreams.
