Rubondo National Park
Safari Highlights:
Paddle
across to Rubondo and discover a
water wonderland where deserted
sandy beaches nestle against a cloak
of virgin forest. Watch dappled
bushbuck move fleet yet silent
through a maze of tamarinds, wild
palms and sycamore figs.
Spot the shaggy-coated aquatic
sitatunga in the papyrus swamps.
Listen to the ‘voice of Africa” as a
pair of magnificent fish eagles
salute the sunrise with a piercing,
evocative duet.
Follow the flight of irridescent
birds which appear everywhere on
Rubondo Island. Herons, storks and
spoonbills proliferate in the swampy
lake fringes, African grey parrots
screech between the forest trees.
Catch the azure brilliance of a
malachite kingfisher perched low on
the reeds and the gorgeous flowing
tail of a paradise flycatcher
flitting through the lakeshore
forest.
Watch the indigenous mammal species
(hippo, vervet monkey, genet and
mongoose) which share this protected
habitat with introduced species such
as chimpanzee, black and white
colobus monkeys, elephant and
giraffe.
Come across Lake Victoria on your
boat trip to Rubondo Island. Activities
here include walking
safaris, boat excursions, sport
fishing and chimpanzee treks. Plans
for canoe trips are in hand.
Luxuriate at the tented camp or
sleep at the park bandas.
