Mount Meru Treks

We also lead other treks to Tanzania’s second tallest mountain, Mt. Meru, which many summit before Kilimanjaro in order to become acclimatized. Climbing Mt. Meru first gives you a better chance at reaching Kilimanjaro summit but Meru, which at 15,000 feet is the fifth-highest peak in all of Africa, is a beautiful trek in its own right. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and forest that host diverse wildlife including nearly 400 species of birds, monkeys and leopards.

It is best to allow three days for climbing Meru. There are two huts available to climbers on the mountain and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb Meru is between October and February. The mountain is usually climbed from the western side of the crater and requires a park ranger as an escort due to the threat of buffalo
