Trekking Details

LEMOSHO - FOREST CAMP
(9,000 FT)
Discover the Masai Steppe as you drive to Lemosho Gate from where you commence your climb. Today is only a few hours of gentle walking to Forest Camp; an opportunity to stretch your legs in anticipation of the long trek ahead.

FOREST CAMP - SHIRA CAMP (11,000 FT)
Awake to the calls of forest birds and animals. After breakfast you will start a slow, 5 hours, walk through the forest and up into the Hagenia zone; here the vegetation begins to thin out as you approach the Shira Plateau. Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo are the three craters of the Kilimanjaro volcanic massif. From Shira Camp there are great views of the Shira Needles and the distant Mount Meru.

SHIRA CAMP -SHIRA TWO CAMP (12,500 FT)
Mingle into the morning as you slowly climb into the alpine heather zone, approaching the Kibo outcrop from the west. Lunch will be taken en route to Shira 2 campsite during this leisurely, 5 hours walk.

SHIRA TWO CAMP - LAVA TOWER CAMP (14.300 FT)
Navigate through thinning vegetation to the Alpine Desert Zone, where few plants survive and temperatures can reach the freezing point. Today you will trek for approximately 4 hours from Shira 2 camp to the shelter of Lava Tower, an imposing relic from Kilimanjaro’s volcanic past and your refuge for tonight.

EXTRA DAY FOR ACCLIMATIZATION AT LAVA TOWER CAMP (14,300 FT)
Settle down to your acclimatization day, when you can relax and walk around to admire the stunning, lunar landscape of the alpine desert. Take this opportunity to walk higher than your sleeping area, following the experienced guides’ maxim of ‘walk high, sleep low’.

LAVA TOWER - ARROW GLACIER (15,500FT)
Gaze in awe at the splendid views of Mount Meru, Kibo peak and the impressive Western Breach wall as you come out from your tent this morning. Tomorrow you will be climbing the Western Breach, but today we take it slowly (as a further aid to acclimatization).

Hike only for two hours, covering the short distance between Lava Tower and the base of the breach where we make our camp at Arrow Glacier. The evening drop in temperature is compensated for by what is reputedly one of the finest sunsets in Africa.

ARROW GLACIER - CRATER CAMP (18,300 FT)
Respond to the call of the mountain as another cold day dawns, with the promise of closing in on your goal. Tackling the magnificent Western Breach that towers above is a major step towards the summit.

Climb slowly upwards, sometimes through Kilimanjaro’s famous snow, along the non-technical ascent route for approximately 6 hours. On reaching the top of the wall, we gradually traverse a crater before arriving at our destination for today - Crater Camp, located far higher than any other camp on the mountain. Here we rest - and prepare for the summit tomorrow!

CRATER CAMP - SUMMIT (19,340 FT) - MWEKA CAMP (10,200 FT)
Set off to the summit, fully acclimatized after your slow ascent to Crater Camp. Unlike the grueling final day faced by climbers on other routes, your summit day consists of only a two hour hike to the crater high point and a ten minute finishing stretch to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Arriving at sunrise to all-encompassing views from this famous peak, your jubilation will know no bounds.

Delight in a thrilling two hours of scree scrambling before starting on the seven hour trek of your 9000 ft descent to Mweka Camp, with its thick forest and thicker air. Relax, celebrate your achievement and sleep!

MWEKA CAMP TO THE GATE
Take time to appreciate once more the tropical rainforest on your descent of Kilimanjaro. The hike from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate can take anything from two to five hours, depending on trail conditions (rain can occur at any time of year at this elevation and a muddy trail calls for a very slow pace). Once we have descended the 4,500 ft to the road-head, it is time for a packed lunch and ‘goodbye’ to your guides, porters and new-found mountain friends - until the next time?
