Why Climb With Africat Adventures?
Our experience with the mountain goes back through generations. Our
CEO is a former porter to a guide who grew up in a village on the
slopes of Kilimanjaro. Like his forefathers before him, he collected
firewood on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, a tradition passed on
down the years as firewood is essential for cooking even today.
AFRICAT has not lost its ancestral memory, nor its roots in - and
close ties to - Tanzania. AFRICAT runs mountain climbing treks with
our own guides and support team; we don’t pass you onto another
company. Our aim is to get you to the top and back in safety and
both our summit and safety records are second to none.
Why is there such a price difference between tour companies?
Most companies DO NOT operate their own trips up the mountain. They
contract with local tour operator companies, which makes it
impossible for the company to control pricing and hiring of staff.
In order to maximize profits, many of these tour operators pay their
crews low wages. But because AFRICAT deals directly with its own
guides and porters, we cut out the middleman, keeping prices low
while paying our staff fair wages.
What do Africat Kili treks and safari prices include?
All of our adventure trips are individually planned and priced to
tally with different Clients’ needs and budget. As a rough
guideline, prices include airport shuttles on arrival and departure,
all local transportation, accommodation and meals as stated on the
itinerary, professional English-speaking mountain & safari guides,
Park Entry and camping fees, transport on safari by 4WD vehicle with
open roof, rescue fees on the mountain.
Prices do not include: international airfares, airport
departure taxes, travel insurance, cancellation/curtailment
insurance, communication charges, gratuities/tips, excess baggage
charges, all meals & alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages unless
included in itinerary, emergency evacuation, laundry and excursions
extra to itinerary.

average (5-12 climbers). Our maximum group size for mountain
climbing is 12. Safari group sizes are from 1-4 0r 1-6 per vehicle
and can comprise of up to 20 travelers using 5 safari vehicles and
so on.
N.B. Special arrangements are required for large groups.
What qualifications are required of Guides?
Driver/Guides on safari are required to hold a valid driving licence
and to have had at least 2 years training in wildlife management,
conservation and animal behavior. All of Africat’s safari drivers
have had at least 5 years experience of guiding tours in the bush in
addition to the above.
All mountain guides must be licensed by KINAPA (Kilimanjaro National
Park Authority). The guides must be familiar with the various trails
of Mt. Kilimanjaro, recommended safety measures, evacuation methods
and emergency health care provision.
Can AFRICAT organize a safari for me after my climb? Or a beach
holiday?
Absolutely. From Kilimanjaro you are within a few hours drive of
some of the finest wildlife reserves on the planet - Serengeti,
Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, to name but a few. We offer
a series of short and longer itineraries tailored to fit your time
constraints and preferences, as well as programs with extensions,
i.e. Kilimanjaro followed by short northern circuit safari and
ending with a visit to Zanzibar.
Where should I go on my safari?
Most people who climb Kilimanjaro with us usually travel to
the northern parks in Tanzania, such as Tarangire, Manyara,
Ngorongoro and Serengeti. Village walks, cultural explorations,
cycling safaris, hiking, and trekking are all options. However, if
you have more time, and want to explore other areas, we have some
great ideas for you in southern Tanzania, Zanzibar and other Indian
Ocean islands off Tanzania’s coast.
Can I customize my safari itinerary and dates?
Certainly. You can either join an existing trip or customize your
own adventure. Our safari professionals in New York and our native
Africats in Tanzania will work very closely with you to put together
a safari which will surpass all your expectations.
Does AFRICAT give back to the community?
Definitely. AFRICAT encourages community empowerment; villagers
participate in our activities such as walking eco-tours, biking
safaris, “Maasai Boma”visits, cultural dances and local market
tours. In each and every instance, the community is directly earning
income and receiving their share of tourism dollars.
What immunizations will I need?
Only yellow fever vaccination is compulsory for entry into Tanzania
& Zanzibar, though you should check with your health care provider
regarding other recommended immunizations. He/she will also be able
to advise you on the type of malaria prophylaxis which you should
take; remember that the latter must be commenced some weeks before
arrival and continued for a week or so after departure from Africa.
What's the weather like on the mountain?
Temperatures vary while on the mountain, from a tropical environment
at the base through temperate rainforest and open moorland to the
lunar landscape and arctic weather of the peaks. It is essential
that you bring thermal underwear, balaclava and other mountain wear.
