Expedition
Highlights
Walk through the ancient forests which form
the chimpanzees’ habitat on the steep slopes
and river valleys of Gombe. Listen for the
fish eagle’s distinctive call and spot the
shy red colobus monkeys hiding in the forest
canopy.
Observe the Chimpanzees of Gombe Stream, the
smallest of Tanzania’s national parks,
reachable by motorboat from Kigoma on the
shores of Lake Tanganyika.
The chimpanzees
(who share about 98% of their genes with
humans) were made famous by the pioneering
work of Dr Jane Goodall who, in 1960,
founded an ongoing behavioural research
program.
The chimps are thus habituated to
human visitors; as are a troop of
beachcomber olive baboons.
Spend a night in the new luxury
tented lodge, the self-catering hostel or
the guest house. Alternatively, pitch your
tent at a lakeshore campsite.
